Isn’t this a terribly clever craft and entertaining idea? I spotted this the Family Bites blog by creative mom and food writer, Jan Scott. Thanks for the inspiration, Jan!

While volunteering at the arts and crafts table during family day at my son’s school, I captured this image of a tiny toddler’s hand. I loved the way he was squishing the paint between his hand and the colours are lovely.

We like to have our friends over for dinner, particularly when the nice weather means we can dine outside. Of course, with lots of kids around, ice cream is the perfect finish to a simple dinner made on the barbecue.

This dresser sits in my dining room, parallel to a big reproduction French harvest table. Ever since the Underwood came down off a high cabinet that I gave away, I haven’t quite been satisfied with how this tableau looked. I’m not sure what I’ll do when these lilacs - pilfered from the branches that overhang the fence and are easily accessible from my kids’ treehouse (ssshhhh) - have had their moment, but right now I think it looks quite pretty. And these tablescapes should be ever-shifting works in progress, right?

Every year around Mother’s Day, I throw a party for my friends to celebrate our hard work in the parenting trenches. After the flowers have been sent, the brunches made and the mothers-in-law accommodated, this event is all about us.
The first year I held this party it was a formal, sit-down lunch. As I’ve gotten smarter and busier (one child turned to two, work responsibility escalated along with extra-curricular and volunteer commitments) this event morphed first to the brunch pictured here, and now to an evening cocktail soiree (more on that later this week).
One year this party was featured in The Toronto Star, as well as it’s parenting website, parentcentral.ca, of which I am the editor. Mother’s Day weekend brought that party to mind and I decided to share the photos here. All these photos were taken by the talented Aaron Harris.

Lori and I chat about the set-up. It’s great to have friends who help share the load.

Simple appetizers made with brie, red-pepper jelly and parsley look pretty next to a simple bowl of blackberries.
